Telecoms price rises can be a real burden for consumers – and for businesses. Fixed prices are often promised when contracts are made, but operators are inclined to increases their charges and leave us with more to pay than we expected to. Don’t let telecom price hikes get you down: if your telecoms provider raises their prices unexpectedly, we’ve rounded up some money saving tips that could help you.
Increases in charges when fixed prices were initially promised are a common occurrence. The telecoms regulator Ofcom recently stated that 10 companies, including big names such as Vodafone, BT, Sky and Virgin Media, put up their prices even though they had originally promised a fixed-price deal when customers took out a contract with them. What many customers don’t realise is that there are some money saving tips which could help them. For example, they don’t have to stay with their telecoms provider if new charges are introduced.
There are new rules in place (from Ofcom) that came into effect from 23 January 2014. These state that mobile phone, landline and broadband contractors must give their customers 30 days’ notice if they want to make changes to their initial contract – and crucially, if as a customer you want to switch to another provider, you will not be charged with any penalty. This essentially means that there won’t be any ‘exit’ fees for you to pay. But remember, you only have 30 days to find a new provider and switch. Follow our money saving tips and make the right choices for you:
- Check price terms before you sign – will the price be the same throughout your contract, or are different prices applicable?

- Look at the length of your contract and make sure you are happy with it
